I came into this trip not knowing anyone and a little anxious about it. While what I’m about to tell you isn’t a story about the friends I have made within the program or your typical friend, it is about a friendly face that has made my mornings a little bit brighter.

Down the street from where I live here in Florence for the month is this little cafe. Out of mere convenience my roommates and I stopped there for coffee and breakfast on our way to the first group activity. There was one man working there who was very friendly and we were able to communicate with. When we were walking home later that day we saw he was still working there 8 hours later, just him. I felt so shocked because usually coffee shops have shifts and multiple employees.
Of course, we went back the next morning because it’s on our way. He asked if we were students studying here and if we had a trip today. He told us how beautiful the views would be and incredible the wine and cheese would be- and boy was he right. I loved that he was so friendly and knowledgable about the cities around him.

Every morning, and sometimes afternoon, since then we have been back. I have a sense of comfort when I walk in there, like that sigh of relief that lets you know you don’t have to worry. We now know his name is David, he gives us pastries when he’s closing up the shop because he has to get rid of them anyway since they’re baked fresh every morning (yum!). Funny to me how something so simple can make my mornings a little easier, friendlier and comfortable. And honestly I think he likes when we come in too to interact with friendly Americans. You’ve got a friend in me David and I know I have an Italian friend in you now.
